Remembering E.W. Kelley (1917-2003)
Studying business administration at IU in the late 1930s, E.W. “Ed” Kelley made a name for himself as a young man of extraordinary energy and leadership abilities.

After graduating in 1939, Kelley soon became a rising star in the business world. As president of Fairmont Foods, he helped develop the Klondike ice cream bar, directed the rollouts of Tang and Cool Whip, and brought Grey Poupon mustard to America. As chairman of Steak ‘n Shake, Kelley turned the fledgling chain into a multimillion dollar company.

Over the years, Kelley has generously supported the school where he got his start. He established the first fully funded chair at the School of Business in 1969 and, in 1997, established the Kelley Scholars Program to fund promising business students. In recognition of Kelley’s generosity, the School was renamed the Kelley School of Business in 1997.

Today, we take pride in carrying on Ed Kelley’s legacy of leadership, philanthropy and innovation.
